Program
The workshop will be designed to maximize active exchange of ideas toward a shared set of artifacts that can support future coordination and collaboration.
Before the workshop
All workshop participants will contribute position papers, which we specify broadly to include provocations, experience reports, problem descriptions, and in-progress prototypes and findings. We will also solicit and maintain a shared library (e.g., in a shared Zotero collection and/or discussion forum and wiki) of resources and information about ongoing projects and relevant ideas. These materials will be collected and distributed to participants prior to the workshop.
On the workshop day
We will provide ample opportunities and specifically scaffolded activities to support idea exchange and synthesis:
- Stage-setting activities including “ecology mapping” exercises, where participants gather to map existing ecologies in their own fields/infrastructures, drawing in part on the assembled position papers and pre-workshop resources.
- Clustered discussion: to facilitate coherent discussions while still allowing for serendipitous engagement and cross-pollination, we will use pre-workshop materials to suggest clusterings of participants based on sector, “layer” of the infrastructure stack, or other suitable themes — while explicitly allowing for participants to self-organize in groupings of their choosing.
- Synthesis and brainstorming: later activities will emphasize prospective brainstorming and synthesis of new ideas and directions for future infrastructural technologies.
